I am JET programme Alumni, TESOL graduate student and active educator currently in my 8th year of teaching. After returning from supporting EAL students in Japan, I returned to Canada and attended the 8month pilot BED programme from Cape Breton University. In my first year of teaching, I was amazed at the lack of resources which were available to support EAL learners outside the English classroom, with many of them unable to participate in classes due to academic language barriers. My graduate research focuses on how technology and targeted teacher training can reduce language barriers and improve outcomes for EAL students, in content areas such as science and social studies both in local and international contexts.
